Water resistance guide

Different terms are employed to describe the water resistance capabilities of watches. To facilitate comparison between watches, it’s essential to grasp these terms thoroughly.

Standard units of measurement include “meters (m),” “atmospheres (bar/atm),” “WATER RESISTANT/W.R.,” and “Daily Water Resistance.”

Numerous individuals seek a wristwatch with water resistance, yet the degree of water resistance sought varies among individuals. This encompasses individuals concerned about unexpected rain showers, those necessitating a wristwatch during water-involved tasks such as car or dishwashing, and those desiring a wristwatch for activities like swimming, skin diving, scuba diving, and other water and marine sports. To understand the different grades of water resistance and the activities they may be appropriate for, please see below:

TYPES OF WATER-RESISTANCE:

0m- NO Resistance:

Should there be no indication on the watch case-back regarding water resistance, than do not assume the timepiece to be water resistant. Keep the timepiece away from any water sources (incl. major or minor splashes)

30m OR 3 Bar (ATM): Water resistance for everyday use, such as protection against rain and perspiration:

While instances of heavy water exposure are infrequent, individuals concerned about rainwater or perspiration effects will find a wristwatch with a 3-bar water resistance sufficient. Watches with this rating are not suitable for water-related tasks or swimming, but they offer adequate protection for daily activities. They can withstand occasional splashes from handwashing or light rain showers. A 3-bar water resistance is the minimum level necessary for everyday use. However, it’s advisable to remove your watch for water sports or activities involving prolonged water exposure, such as water rides at amusement parks.

50M OR 5 Bar(ATM) water resistance against splashes:

A water resistance of 5bar or more will ensure that the watch remains safe even if you participate in water sports or other activities where you can get splashed with water. Wristwatches with this setting can be used not only for sports and recreation, but also for work that requires frequent contact with water. Although they have a higher level of water resistance than those designed for everyday use, 5bar is still not enough for skin diving.

100m OR 10 Bar (ATM): water resistance for water sports and fishing:

Wristwatches boasting a water resistance rating of 10bar to 20bar or higher are ideal for use in industries like fishing, agriculture, and car washing, as well as during water-based recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, yachting, surfing, motorboating, and even skin diving. Nevertheless, it’s essential to note that button operations may become challenging if water droplets adhere to the watch. Individuals keen on utilizing their smartwatch or connected watch fully during water sports should exercise caution. For instance, if you intend to listen to music while swimming, ensure that the watch you select offers this functionality before making a purchase. While watches with a 10bar water resistance are generally deemed suitable for swimming, this recommendation primarily pertains to cautious entry into swimming pools and leisurely swimming. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that diving activities during swimming may subject the wristwatch to increased water pressure, potentially leading to water seepage. Thus, vigilance is advised not only during diving but also during other rigorous activities to prevent such occurrences.

200m + OR 20+ Bar (ATM):  Complete water resistance:

Wristwatches designed for skin diving and saturation diving are fully reliable for use in any water-related circumstances. Diving-specific models, boasting water resistance ranging from 200m to 300m, are advisable for scuba diving. Apart from digital variants, these timepieces feature mechanisms for monitoring dive duration and decompression intervals. Similarly, saturation diving models, with water resistance spanning from 300m to 1,000m, are capable of enduring pressures at depths of 300m to 1,000m and incorporate a helium release valve for added functionality.

Battery replacements and water resistance:

The water resistance of a watch remains valid only if the watch remains intact and undamaged, without any tampering or opening. In the event that the watch requires opening for activities such as battery replacement, the assurance of its water resistance cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct a pressure test post-opening to ascertain that the watch has been resealed impeccably, thus reinstating the promised level of resistance.

Failure to undergo this testing not only absolves Cajees Timezone of any liability for waterproofing but also releases the manufacturer from accountability for any potential impact resulting from third-party intervention, which may compromise the water resistance of the watch.
